Those are good stretches. I recently saw a video of a girl saying that the splits are easy to achieve and that you can learn it in 30 minutes. Well, I‘ve been a dancer since I was 3 and I can guaranty that trying to do the splits in 30 minutes is incredibly dangerous, even if you already are into stretching.
So, I’m really grateful to see that not all people are spreading wrong and dangerous information in the internet!

I’m with you all the way! I recently saw video of a girl saying if you do these stretches, you can have your splits within the next 3 days! And I’m thinking, that’s crazy! I’ve been a dancer for the past 11 years and only got my splits(left, right and centre) last year. You need to work hard for your splits, you need to stretch 6 days of the week while still giving yourself one day of rest. Be determined but don’t push yourself too hard, you could pull a muscle! Have a great day and stay safe!

@Mariam Studies search it up!
When we do the splits, our hips must be facing forward, not sideways, since this can be bad for our body. I’m sure you’ll find more useful information if you search online

I’m a gymnast and we do all of those except the last stretch during warmup before we do splits. Also don’t rush getting your splits all the way down! It took me 6-7 years for me to get mine all the way down.

6 years? That’s embarrassing.

September 11, 2022 at 4:28 pm
@Mary Everett No, it really isn’t. It took me four years in high school to get front and side splits perfect and I was one of the only dancers who could. Some people have much tighter hips, bad instructors, or even less time. You should never shame someone for pursuing fitness, it’s a bad look on you.
Mary Everett
September 11, 2022 at 4:37 pm
@Crystal Owens If it took you that long to get a splits, it means you didn’t try hard enough. If it took other people even longer, were they trying at all? Even if you could only naturally do a splits that’s about 90 degrees, you can get your splits within a year by just sitting in a splits position for a few minutes everyday. It doesn’t require coaches or any signifiant amount of time.

@Mary Everett or, my dear, it was more that I was a high school student who had carpentry classes, horseback riding, yoga, digital art, and a permanently damaged hip flexer. Like I said: you should never attempt to shame anyone. It makes you look bad… and also makes me question who taught you fitness? ‘Not trying hard enough’ is super toxic bullshit usually taught to cheerleaders or ballerinas who will burn out very quickly after they leave the tutelage of the person who taught them that. Those students are victims and will struggle with that mindset their entire life. A good instructor teaches pushing to your limit but NOT past it.

@Crystal Owens There is no such thing as “should” or “bad”. Aside from that, I know it’s absolutely possible to get the splits within a year because that’s what I did. My natural splits was not even to 90 degrees. I practised resting in a splits position for several minutes every few days, and got the splits in a year and a half. If I had done it everyday, I would’ve had it within a year. Since it is physically possible for someone to get a splits in a year, the only reason they wouldn’t is because they didn’t try hard enough.

As a former dancer I want to add to this: don’t start trying the splits until you’re already accustomed to stretching! It’s not your weight or your fitness level that matters, mostly. It’s your practiced flexibility. Square your hips and don’t push it into pain. Flexibility will help you in your life so don’t be afraid to start stretching today. I promise you’ll feel so much better.

Oh and by the way I’m a gymnast and squaring your hips is basically just trying to keep them straight. But guys trying to get your split takes TIME and to get your split you have to be patient it took me almost 5 years! Once you get them I suggest keep doing them everyday or so to keep your split because if you don’t do them you’ll lose your flexibility! Stay healthy y’all!

As a dancer gymnast and figure skater (or just a flexible person in general) I would say this is a good way to start off on getting a split, and if you already have one to keep it you must practice it every day or if you can’t cause your sick or something just do some stretches, even if you can still practice your splits that day still do some stretches before cause if your not prepared enough you could really hurt yourself.

Do you have some good starting stretches for absolute beginners?
Rainbow LB
September 11, 2022 at 10:25 pm
@astrid birk grarup Just start working on trying to get your legs flexible and basically it’s pretty easy from there! A good stretch is runners lunge and try to push on your front leg, but don’t do it too hard because you could really injure yourself so be careful on what you do. Also keep your hips squared (keep them straight) and you should be good from there! I hope this helps!

I have been trying to do the splits my entire life, but every single time I start stretching to work towards it, I pull BOTH of my hip flexors muscles and lose all the flexibility I gained while my hips recover. This is every single time. Does anyone have any clue as to why, because I might just give up lol

Also put yoga blocks either side of you when sliding into the end position, it can help prevent you from pulling anything if you slip too far and your hands don’t reach the floor
