Worst sales conversation, my second one ever… this guy liked my sales message and was all on board., he just needed to bring the finance /COO guy in to ask some questions and give the final nod. I thought I was just coming to a short QnA… but the new guy new nothing,, so I started a fumbly unexpected sales conversation. Guy 2 was totally bored with my detail approach which guy 1 loved. He was not subtle about it. Then he started throwing questions that felt like an interrogation, in their tone. And no support from guy 1 who had been so keen. It was SOOOO bad. And being so new I still would have tried working with them if I could have. Imagine that. The universe saved me from my inexperienced self, and then gave me my first client, totally fab, the ideal client that I didn’t know how to describe or ask for. Best client ever. Lucky me.
Used to sell hot tubs. I was pretty awesome at it, or so I thought. One day a married couple came in. I started talking to the husband and before too long he asked me how the jets were in a particular sales floor model. I instantly went into my typical BS, “… these jets are amazing. They’re super powerful and…” He cut me off. “That won’t work for us. My wife has fiber myalgia and powerful jets would cause her pain.” That one interaction has forever changed the way I approach sales. I ask far more questions now before I launch into any “pitch.”
