This conversation is really true with parents, expecially Asian parents .
I went to school thinking if I don’t get a very very good grade I will end up on the streets. That was my thinking from 5th class and up.
I am happy that you could pursue what you really like and makes you happy.

I know it’s kinda sad when you can’t follow your own dreams due to your parents didn’t support what you love, but this are so common among asian parents. My parents actually want me to become a doctor but I’m so grateful that they still support and allow me to follow my dreams as a designer interior. But I do understand why they want us to become a doctor or lawyer (high profile jobs that makes so much money), because the world is so harsh and jobs are so hard to find these days but doctor/lawyer (for example) are jobs that quite easier getting a lot of salary. But our parents especially asian parents were a lot more experience went it comes to the ‘real world of jobs’. They work so hard to get where they are now, they work so hard for us, and for our future so that the children’s future are safe especially getting a job. So they want us to become doctor/lawyer, so that we can have a financial secure and don’t have to struggle like our parents because they don’t want us to struggle like them not because they want the money, but because they want us to have a ‘safe and secure’ future.

This is normal with Asian parents. And no, it’s not because they want their kids’ money for themselves, it’s because they want their kids to be financially stable and live a good life. If you study to become doctors, lawyers, engineers, etc, you’re pretty much guaranteed a job (as opposed to doing an arts degree, for example), so that’s why they push their kids into those fields.
And this is normal IN Asian countries too, not just with Asian parents who have migrated to the west

The reason that Asian parent want their children is because they know what it’s like back where they immigrated. These are the jobs that give you lots of money so you don’t end up on the “street” and so you can have a good life. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do what you want to do but I’m just explaining why.

I totally relate having Asian parents. I don’t think it’s all about the “prestige” associated with those careers but rather the financial security. Because they know that their children will make a comfortable living in those careers that is rather low risk than actually pursuing a passion and paving one’s own path. I think a lotttt of it is fear based/scarcity mentality especially if they’ve come from humble beginnings because they know what it’s like to struggle and they don’t want to see their child go through it. But it’s also hard on the child because it’s impossible to stick it out in medicine if that’s not the career of one’s own choosing.

I relate to this too much 🙁 asian parents are usually so harsh since they had humble beginnings, especially if they’re an immigrant so they know what it’s like to not have much and don’t want the same for their kids. As valid and reasonable as that is, they fail to account for how taxing those kind of jobs are for their kids and how much they’d struggle mentally from them. Personally, if I had kids, as unlikely as it is, I would let them choose what they want to do and support them. I have so much respect for healthcare workers for dealing with distraught families and seeing people die everyday. I know that I would damn well buckle under the pressure. Lawyers as well, from what I’ve seen in lawyers I’ve met, the burnout is strong in the law industry. Asian parents usually don’t think of the effects these kinds of jobs have on mental health, and think that lots of money=good happy life, which in most cases isn’t true.
Tldr; I understand that asian parents want the best for their kids and for them to live comfortably, but they usually don’t think of the effects that the job has on their mental health.

As a parent I am going to try my best to be as understanding and supportive of my kids. Living now in a place where there are farmers, police officers, business owners, teachers, welders, construction workers, nurses, bank tellers etc all living pretty decent and happy lives..my kids can do whatever they want to as long as they are happy & safe. They don’t need to be rich to be happy.

What do your parents think now? I’m sure they were just worried about you having financial security, my mom was the same way growing up. She never wanted me to struggle or have to depend on a man so she pushed me….which kind of backfired, but that’s a story for another time. Even if your parents haven’t told you, I have no doubt that they couldn’t be more proud of the woman you have become. 😁
